America’s 10 worst airport websites: No.7 – Jackson-Evers International Airport

Jackson-Evers International Airport (read our review) is probably the busiest airport in the state of Mississippi. One should expect their website to be up to par, but sadly reality seldom meets our expectations.

While I was doing research to write the general US airport information articles for CanDoCanGo there weren’t many websites that frustrated me and depressed me more than Jackson-Evers International Airport’s official website, and I will tell you why.

Many US airport websites had little or no mention of any accessibility services and facilities for people with special needs that may be found in the airports themselves; I accept that as a hard fact of life.

What I find unacceptable is that while the airport’s authority figures did not deem it necessary to dedicate more than a few lines of their precious website space on accessibility (actually just 88 words in two question/answer posts in the airport’s FAQ) they felt it necessary (if not essential to the website’s function) to have a dedicated web page as a “self-promotional extravaganza “ with photographs of them posing and smiling along with detailed descriptions of their careers and lifetime achievements.

The screenshot below is just a part of the “self-promotional extravaganza” web page. There are more pictures (and in better detail) of those fine ladies and gentlemen on the actual web page, so in case you want to read about their life’s achievements, please visit the page itself here:

Normally I would not care about this vanity display but it comes in striking contrast with the lack of useful and important information for disabled travellers and travellers with special needs, therefore Jackson-Evers International Airport’s website truly has earned a place among the worst of the worst in America’s 10 worst airport websites.

In case you’re wondering, here is a screenshot of the FAQ with the few scraps of useful information marked in red for you, all 88 words of them (url: http://www.jmaa.com/frequentlyasked.htm) :

So, to sum it up, below are the reasons I included Jackson-Evers International Airport’s Website among America’s 10 worst airport websites:

  • Insultingly little information on the airport’s accessibility features (88 words, including the questions!)
  • Absurd amount of self-promotion of both the airport and the airport’s authority figures leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of people who actually seek useful information from Jackson-Evers International Airport’s website.
