Kuala Lumpur: KLCC Suria shopping mall

CanDoCanGo stamp of approvalThe KLCC Suria shopping mall is probably Kuala Lumpur’s most prestigious shopping mall, located as it is at the base of the imposing Petronas Towers at the KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre) park, conference and shopping complex. How does it stack up on accessibility? Let’s have a look.

Getting there

The KLCC has its own station on the Kelana Jaya metro line. Like all the KJ line’s underground stations, it has a lift for passengers with reduced mobility. It also has a disabled toilet which is reasonably well equipped and was reasonably clean when we visited.

Coming out of the station towards the KLCC, there’s a wheelchair lift to take you up about a couple of metres to the lower ground level of the KLCC Suria shopping mall. Nice!

If you’re arriving by car, there’s a broad arrival forecourt – no kerb to climb before entering the building.

Inside Suria

Getting around is easy enough, although the mall can often get quite crowded, particularly on weekend afternoons and particularly at the lower ground level. Queues for the lifts tend to build up quite alarmingly!

There are plenty of disabled toilets around. They’re usually kept locked, but it’s no problem to find an attendant to open one up for you. The toilet we looked at on Level 3 was fine, although perhaps less well appointed than the one in the metro station.

The shops vary in accessibility, but most appear to offer reasonable access. The Kinokuniya bookshop on Levels 4 and 5 deserves a special mention for its efforts to make itself fully accessible for wheelchairs – it has enough space for wheelchairs to manoeuvre, ramps up to the raised section of the lower floor and a lift to the upper floor.

The terrace of restaurants at ground level on the park side of the building are all on a level with the exit from the shopping centre and thus present no difficulty for wheelchair access. (Santini and the San Francisco Steakhouse are particular favourites of ours – turn right as you leave the building and carry on to the end.) Not only that, but there are also several ramps allowing easy access down to the level of the very attractive park.

Conclusion

If you fancy a day out shopping, coupled with a bite to eat and a pleasant turn around the park, then the KLCC Suria is certainly doable – and offers as good a range of shopping as you’ll find anywhere in Malaysia.
