Taxis for wheelchair users in Singapore

Singapore is one of the better cities in South East Asia if you’re disabled. Many of the pavements have dropped kerbs to allow easy access for wheelchairs and the road crossings have textured bumps to make things easier for blind people. Many of the hotels also have specially adapted rooms for disabled people. We’ll get around to listing some of them soon.

Meanwhile, here are some options for wheelchair users to get around Singapore by road. Note that most only take “normal-sized” wheelchairs unless otherwise stated.

Hyundai Starex taxi from SMRT

Multi-purpose van with hydraulic ramp. Unfortunately there’s only one of them currently available and there are no plans to bring in any more. It costs S$8 plus the metered fare for immediate bookings and S$16 for bookings 30 minutes or more in advance.

Handicaps Welfare Association

They have about 20 buses which can take all types of wheelchairs. Priority is given to those going to work, school, or for medical appointments. The service operates from 0900 till midnight and costs S$20 per journey – HWA members get a discount.

Private Operators

Some private operators have suitable vehicles but the numbers are limited so advance booking is necessary. These vehicles can usually accommodate larger-sized wheelchairs.
Corporate Limo charges S$55 per trip for its minibus.

Attraction Tours charges S$75 per hour for its mini-vans, with a minimum three-hour booking. It also has modern London cab vehicles costing S$40 per hour, again with a minimum of a three-hour booking.

Private Ambulances

Civic Ambulance has four ambulances which can accommodate all types of wheelchairs. There are also two staff members who will carry the wheelchairs up and down stairs. It costs S$80 for a two-way trip during office hours and up to S$150 after office hours.
