English Heritage – website of the month!

English Heritage membership - a great gift

We’re kicking off our new feature, website of the month, with English Heritage. Hats off to them, they are doing everything possible to make their properties accessible to all. They even offer a free access guide so you can find out about their properties before you go. You can download the free guide here (PDF file, 3.0  MB; requires a suitable reader, eg Adobe Reader).

There’s information about wheelchair access, which properties offer wheelchair hire, disabled parking, how to obtain information in Braille, and also to let you know that assistance dogs are welcome at all their properties. If a disabled person has a companion to assist them, then the assistance person gets free entry. I don’t see how they could possibly be doing more to promote accessibility for all.

English Heritage exists to protect and promote England’s spectacular historic environment and ensure that its past is researched and understood. Looking after over 400 historic properties, with 11 million visitors each year, it acts as a champion for heritage, maintaining a register of England’s most important historic buildings, monuments and landscapes.

They also publish a handbook for members and their easy to use website is absolutely full of information about their properties and what they’re doing to preserve the country’s culture and heritage.

The one small criticism I have of them is that their banners state that membership costs “from” £33.50. Well, it does, but only if you’re over 60. The usual membership is £46 per annum. It still sounds like a pretty good deal when you consider what you get for your money. So, if you’re wondering about what to buy friends or family for Christmas, why not give them a membership to English Heritage? It’s a gift that will last all year!
