Ryanair cutting services to Edinburgh Airport

According to an article in the BBC today, Ryanair will be cutting back on its services from Edinburgh Airport, which is currently the carrier’s largest hub in Scotland. Ryanair of course is well-known for its quick turn-arounds, even if it means treating passengers like baggage on some occasions. Note also that Ryanair have been fined for discrimination against disabled travellers.

Add this to the fact that Edinburgh Airport is, in our opinion, one of the worst airports we’ve ever had the misfortune to pass through. Perhaps it’s good news for disabled travellers (or indeed any traveller) that BAA is being forced to sell the airport because of competition rules. The sale is expected to go through by the summer of this year. Let’s hope that the new owners run the place better than the old ones.

So, what will all this mean for travellers? Perhaps just a smaller choice of flights if the gap left by Ryanair isn’t filled by other carriers (apparently Ryanair currently accounts for about a fifth of the airport’s passengers). And as for the airport itself, we can hardly imagine how the place could possibly be any worse under new ownership. Goodbye and good riddance to the old regime.
